kmail offline imap?

Hi, I'm trying to get filters to work in kmail so that particular sounds are played when I receive emails from particular senders. The problem is that I want to do this with IMAP folders. This used not to be possible but apparently it is now possible due to 'Disconnected IMAP', which enables local storage and synchronisation of imap folders, and also allows filtering on folders. Does anyone know how to do this? I am using kubuntu hoary hedgehog with the latest kde/kmail (I think 3.4 for kde).

disconnected IMAP is one of the options when you create a setting for receiving mails.
Like POP3 or IMAP
(KMail->Settings->Network: Tab receiving)

Hi and thanks for the reply. I don't have that option in settings. I can think of two possible reasons:

1) Kontact is not working properly (although KMail is working fine). Kontact crashes when I try and open it.

2) I am a single user on a home pc that is not part of a network other than my adsl router connection. Do I have to set up some network software first?

With thanks

Hmm, should work without special setup.

Can you try with KMail as a standalone application?

Yes I tried it both from Kontact and, having closed it down and quit from the system tray, I started it in konsole. In both cases the menu in settings is Hide Toolbar; Show Quicksearch, Configure Filters; Configure POP Filters; .. then options for configuring Shortcuts, Notifications, Toolbars, KMail. There is no network option. I am using KMail 1.8 on KDE 3.4.0 with Kubuntu Hoary Hedgehog release.

Thanks again for any help

Hi, there is no 'network' option, but I guess it might be the same as groupware? Under Configure KMail, Miscellaneous, Groupware, I checked 'enable IMAP resource functionality' and unchecked the 'hide groupware folders'. But there are no parallels of the imap folders, and I can't see any extra folders showing anywhere. Also I tried sending myself a message and the filter I have set (that plays a particular sound file when my name is in the sender) didn't operate. So that suggests to me that this isn't the answer. Also the emails take time to load when I start up and open items at the slower imap speed, not in the way they would if they were stored locally.

It would be great to sort this so thanks for any help.

I am using KDE3.3, it is the second item here, right under Identities.

I don't think it has anything to do with groupware, it should be right where you have your other reveicer settings, assuming you are already using KMail for mail

Hi there, thanks again for your response. The answer: In KDE 3.4.0, you go to Configure KMail, Click on accounts, click the 'Receiving' tab, and create a new account. As you do so there is an option to choose disconnected IMAP instead of IMAP. So I deleted my old IMAP account and set up this dIMAP one. It took a fair while to synchronize (on a 512 ADSL connection it took a good ten minutes).

And the result? Now I have what I want! Instant local access to email folders, and because they are local it is possible to apply filters. Which means I can now go out and record all my friends saying 'it's me', convert them into sound files, and associate them with their incoming mail. Sad but cool.

The only question I have is how long it takes to synchronize on an hour by hour basis (I have it set to receive mail every minute) - and also how resource-hungry this will be in terms of processing and/or bandwidth. Does anyone know?

Thanks anyway, Will
