Try this I am not saying it will work, but hey! worth a try.
Go to System Settings, then click on the Advanced Tab.
Now select 'Session Manager' then select and click on 'Start with an empty session' and also click on either 'Turn off Computer' or 'Restart Computer' then click on Apply. Now come right out of KDE4 by restarting your computer.

You should theoretically have a clean desktop where you can now place on it your widgets and icons and apps onto the task bar. However, once you have done this, you will need to right click on the desktop, and select 'lock widgets', then go back to 'System Settings', Advanced Tab, Session Manager, and then select the option
'Restore Manually Saved Setting'. I would keep the choice of 'Turn off Computer or 'Restart Computer' and not 'End Current Session'.

Then click on Apply. Do not choose 'Restore Previous Session' or you will be back to where you started! I still haven't sussed these settings yet but I am working on it!

Get back to me if this works. (And if you lock your widgets, they won't disappear either from the taskbar or the desktop.)

Thanks!! It didn`t work as i expected -returning to default settings after install- , but, i was able after that to restore all widgets to the taskbar, so the problem is solved anyway. :P

Now my next big problem: OpenGL. I`ll start a new thread for that... :)

How to make KDE4 back to defaults

I had the same problem as Marjov. I also completely messed up my theme in KDE 4.0 [KDE] and did not manage to restore it back to something acceptable.

I solved the problem by logging in as root and deleted my old user and created a new one with the same user name. It obviously deletes everything from your old profile including the files in your home folders. So you need to back it all up before deleting your original user.

Not a very clean way but it works quite easily for us the dummies

I know you guys have resolved this, but incase anyone else happens to stumble across this thread:
If you want to revert KDE4 back to factory settings, then delete or rename the folder .KDE4 located in your users home directory.
