Please help-no sound on rosegarden4

hello
i am a linux newbie though am improving daily. I downloaded and installed rosegarden4 for my debian kde comp. However i am yet to get a sound out of it. It supposedly comes with basic midi sounds (piano, drums etc) but they dont seem to work. It is possible that there is nothing wrong with my setup and that the instrument s are just naames only and i need to install some midi patches or something. Could someone please contact me if they have used this software and know what im talking a bout or if you can tell me how to go about loading some instruments on there .
all help greatly appreciated, i really want to get this software up and running as it took me long enough to work out how to download and instqall it and now i cant get it to work.
thanks pad

You need patches. I guess the port 0 is an external midi device. If you don't have such a device, you have 2 options: you can load a patchset into your soundcard if your soundcard supports this(check sf2load). Then if midi is sent to that soundcard, you will hear it. You can install 'pmidi' and do a 'pmidi -l' to get a list of available midi ports. Another option is to use timidity, which is a software for soundcards who do not support loading a patchset into the card itself. You can then start timidity in server mode, and you should see extra ports in 'pmidi -l'. You can then use those in Rosegarden.
