RE: cannot move windows

seems more like a MEPIS problem then a desktop problem. Not to sound too harsh but you better ask this on a MEPIS mailinglist or forum.

Maybe the window manager has crashed.

Do the windows still have decorations (title bar and minimize/maximize/close buttons)?

I am having the same problem.
kde 3.2.1
linux suse 9.1

I see decoration (title bar, maximize button, etc...).
I cannot move any window. I tried using:
ALT-left click and dragging (nothing moves but the icon changes into a 4 arrow shape).
Click and drag the title bar (nothing moves but the icon changes into a 4 arrow shape).
Click on the icon at the left of the title bar and clicked on "Move" (same as above).

My system has been running for years. The uptime is currently 30 days (power failure about a month ago) and this problem occured last week (april 3rd).

I was using my system normally. I do not know what could have caused this.

kwin seems to be running:
roychri 5344 0.0 0.6 27312 9468 ? S Mar12 24:23 kdeinit: kwin -session 11c0a8xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx0094200000_117xxxxxxxxxx96_64xxx33

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Try creating a new user and see if that account has the same problems.
If not, perhaps something is wrong with a configuration file of the current user.

You can try to rename/remove the files ~/.kde/share/config/ksmserverrc and ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc (first one removes information about sessions, second one resets the configuration of kwin) and remove the content of ~/.kde/share/config/session. That would reset the kwin configuration and information about previous kwin-sessions.

I went into #kde and someone recommended that I use:

Source code

1
kwin --replace

it worked!

I can move windows now.

I hope this helps someone.

We have this bug too

At least once each week, one of our (about twenty) developers gets caught by this bug.
I.e. kwin is still running, we can raise/lower windows, but it is impossible to move or resize them. Running kwin --replace does fix the move/resize issue, but we would ery much like to see the bug fixed!

We are running RHEL4, and reported the bug to RedHat two years ago, but haven't got much of a response (i.e. they kept asking for more and more information until we gave up).
We still don't know what triggers the bug - we cannot reproduce it - but we have seen it more than a hundred times.

One would believe that such a central component of KDE should get fixed sooner, but apparently not...

RE: We have this bug too

I am not using redhat, I am using SuSE 9.1.
I have two boxes running that and one of them is my firewall/gateway. This one have this problem all the time. Since I do not work on it day to day, I just lived with it. It is the first time it happened to my desktop computer.
Maybe that's the key!!! Usage. Since I rarely use the keyboard and mouse and the screensaver is running pretty much all the time... Would that help you reproduce the bug?

Good luck.

Did you report it at bugs.kde.org?

I checked and found this report, wich was closed:
