hi folks,
do you know karamba? If not it's time to visit http://www.superkaramba.com or http://netdragon.sourceforge.net . So the aim of karamba is to provide a possibility to make your desktop interactive.
I had a similar idea. I found it annoying to have a lot of opened windows or an overstocked systray. For example korn, a very good util in my opinion, but not really nice to have in systray when you own more than one or two mailboxes. Also nervy as separate new window. Similar problems appear with an IM or a media player. Sure you can add new functions to the affected applications but this is often not needed.
Where have we got enough place to display such things? Yeah, on the desktop! I for myself find it confusing to have more than 15 icons on the desktop, so there is a lot of available place.
Karamba use this place, but wouldn't it be great to have such a thing fully integrated in the desktop and not as separate programm. Karamba provides interactivity with python, but a c++-support or a framework that can pick up every application would be more functional.
What do you think about this?

I think Karamba is better as a seperate program. I never used Karamba, but what I know of it, is that it provides extra graphical things to the desktop. It seems to be a great way to improve the look of the desktop, but I can imagine that this comes with the price of the reduce of speed, espessially on "slow" systems.

Personally, I allmost never see the desktop. I have all my windows maximized, and I use seperate desktops for seperate programs. If a program like ksensors is set on the desktop, I will never see it back.

There seems to be plans to make an autohide system to make the system tray more functional.

The system tray is an applet. Maybe, it can be made possible to add applets to Karamba. That way, it is possible to set the system tray on any place on a desktop. But I don't know how difficult this is, and what the security risks are.

hi,
my post wasn't in order to judge about karamba, but I agree with you, my 733 mhz are too slow to use karamba.
I also don't see the desktop so often, but I find it useful to have a more fundtional desktop. We waste all the place or better I waste it. And there are informations that you don't have to see always but when you want to see them, you like doing it fast.
