KAutorun and automatically mounting CD-ROMs

Hello,

I came across a program called KAutorun to automatically do things with CDs, including optionally run programs on them. See:

http://www.linux.org/apps/AppId_5547.html

I'm wondering - it seems like this program continuously checks whether a CD is in the drive every second or so. Is it possible to write a program that instead sleeps and is interrupted on the insertion of a CD?

How does autorun work in Windows? I suspect it also checks the CD drive continually, but I'm not sure.

Can't CD-ROM drives send a signal to the operating system when CDs are inserted, ejected, etc.?

Personally, I don't care about automatically running a program, but it would be nice if the CD got mounted on insertion, and if audio CDs automatically start playing, which this program allows. Even cooler would be if DVDs could automatically start playing (I have a DVD-ROM drive).

I only know that windows detects CD's whenever the CD door is opened/closed.
