Forget GNOME

Why do big corporations like Sun support GNOME instead of KDE ? It's obvious that GNOME is inferior to KDE in almost every aspect and the Qt license issue has been solved years ago. Internet polls show that KDE is the most popular desktop for linux and that's what matters not some weird articles which claim that GNOME is better .

One of the reasons for Sun is the huge C know how they have in-house.

Another reason I heard of is the way Unix was/is sold to customers.
Unix customers expect that whatever comes with the standard install disks can be used for development under any licence without extra cost.

Also, at the time of evaluation, the features we like in KDE might not have been present at their current state and the advantage might not have looked big enough considering the more advanced C knowledge of Sun's engineers.

The actual reasons are unknown, everything is just speculation, even if Sun people officially list some.

I think it is only fair to assume they have chose what was best for them.

Others will choose depending on their checklists, for example IBM has not taken any of the two free desktop environments as a new standard desktop yet, they provide additonally packages of both for their customers.

i like kde and i really like gtk2 - unfortunately i do not like gnome (from 2.4 on) and qt, so i'm using xfce4 as WM and running kde-apps out of it

i wish to see kde ported to gtk2 and then it will be great - the worst case i can imagine would be using a gnome-port that bases on qt :-)

That is not very likely to happen.
It would be a major effort to implement the whole Qt API in GTK+

Especially since it would be absolutely unnecessary, as Qt already exists and works well.

I believe KDE is the best choice for the many new Linux users we are getting. Coherent and up tp or better than THAT GUY*S old revamped software.

All the same, in case the organisation stumbles for any reason, it's advantageous to have a mature alternative ready. Just like Soyuz replaces the Spaceshuttle.

Someone major has to support it for base and confidence building but exactly why SUN does, I know not, but I'm glad they do. I use KDE or icewm.

Button order

There is one new "feature" in gnome which is very annoying for me. It's the order of buttons in dialogs. In gnome, you see for example:

[Cancel] [Ok]

Why comes the less important button first???

It's because GNOME believes this to be more usable and more logical.
It's a shame that some users are just too stupid to see that it's all for their best. ;-)
