mandrake

I know that Mandrake has a tool that controls the usb ports and when the stick is plugged in then a icon on the desktop is shown...

I don't know at the moment how this work but on the Mandrake website should be the answer. Maybe when you find something there you can post it here.

On my Suse Linux system, I plugged it in, and it created a entrance in /etc/fstab

Then all I did was right click on my KDE desktop add new device selected the new device just created and I then had a Icon on my desktop.

Mount and umount the device when plugging it in or removing it.

What version of RH ? I am sure if it is a recent version it will support no problem. I'll check my /etc/fstab tonight and post de details to you.

i did it like that and it works great:

1.add an entry in fstab like this:
[code:1]
/dev/sda1 /mnt/pendrive vfat user,noauto,rw 0 0
[/code:1]
if you have different filesystem on your pendrive, change vfat to something else, also if you have any scsi harddisks change /dev/sda1 to appropriate device name
1a. create directory /mnt/pendrive
2.create new harddisk icon on a desktop (device: /dev/sda1)
3.plug your pendrive in
4.click icon you've created
5.pendrive will automatically mount and open in konqueror
5a.copy, move, delete files - do what you want :-)
6.when you're finished, right click icon and select unmount
7.plug the pendrive out
8.that's it! :-)

instead 4 and 6 you can of course use

mount /mnt/pendrive
and
umount /mnt/pendrive

hope it helps
best regards
yemu

ps. i use gentoo linux and kde 3.1.2

In Mandrake 9.1, I just plugged my minidrive in and it detected it and an icon showed up on the desktop. It wasn't mounted though. They should make it so it's automounted.
