using windows keys

Hello,

Does anyone know how to map the windows keys to lauch the menu via kcontrol ?

I can only use the combination of a window key + another key to do something, but it would be nice if only pressing the left windows key would pop up the menu.

then they are not completely useless :D

To use the Windows keys in Linux you have to remap them. This is a possibility to map them to the keys
F13 and F17:

Add the following lines in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/40custom_load-xmodmap :
xmodmap -e "keycode 115=F13"
xmodmap -e "keycode 117=F17"

After that and a X-Server reboot you can assign F13 and F17 to special tasks in the KDE control center.

Applying functions to keys

The above suggestion works well to re-asign existing KDE functions to any key but what about functions that do not already exist in the Control Center?

How do you add your own function and bind that to a key or key combination?

What kind of function do you want to add?

In Mandrake 9.1, the left Windows key already brings up the Main menu but I don't know the situation with other OSs. The right side Windowskey currently does nothing.
