GUI Login Screen

Howdy everybody!! I am happy to announce that I have made the transition from Windows to a real OS...Linux RH 9!! Woot! Now...I am all about customizing my box and love a gui interface and have found ALOT of things that I can change....but...I have yet to find out how to change the GUI Login screen!! I am unsure if it is a KDE, X-Windows or Linux thing!? I am about to make the upgrade to KDE 3.2, but first I wanna find out all the info and changes I can make. The last thing on my list is the Login. Can any of you Linux manipulators help me on this?? Either a place to download a new one (like kde-look.org) or a place that will tell me how to create a new one!? Be easy on me...I have only been a this a week!! :D

Well, the login screen is a Linux thing.
There may be tools to do this automaticly bu one way is:
as root edit /etc/sysconfig/desktop and change GNOME to KDE or XDM.

After this you must kill whatever manager is currently running and start the new one. Easy way, reboot.

Each manager comes with their one configuration tools. GNOME Display Manager as gdmsetup, KDE Display Manager can be configured in the Control Center (System Admin/Login Manager).

Hope this is clear enough.

that did not work!! I thought it would!!

I have KDE already loaded. I go to the Control Center then to System Administration, then to Login Manager. I changed some small things like the background and logo (instead of clock), saved the settings and rebooted the machine. No changes were seen, I log in, go back to the Control Center, look at the changes I made and they are still there! Whats the deal?? What do i need to do to make it use the KDE Login Manager??

Well, I don't know what the MSN search has to do with anything but i found it myself. It is in the gdm.conf file. There is a gui for that called GDM Setup that will install new themes for you.

If you chose not to help me because I have MSN search on my homepage then thats just childish. Incase you didn't look...I also have Google search on there as well!! My prefered Searcher!!! BUT...when you are looking for help and not getting any results..you will use all resources available!!

Yeah, I don't think that RH9 uses the KDE login manager (KDM) by default, so changing the settings in the KDE control centre wont have any effect. If you want your system to use the KDM login manager rather than the GDM one, you'll need to edit the file /etc/rc.conf. Change the line which says:

[code:1]DISPLAYMANAGER=gdm[/code:1]

to

[code:1]DISPLAYMANAGER=kdm[/code:1]

andymullins, I think I may have the same problem. All changes I make to the KDE Login Manager are not reflected when I reboot or go back to the login screen. I may not be using the KDE login just like wyzzord.

I looked for the /etc/rc.conf file, but it is not in my folder. I'm running Mandriva 2007. Could you give me a hint as to how to change the login to KDE?

How can I find out what login my OS is currently using?

I"m assuming that my login should look like this:
http://www.awprofessional.com/content/im…s/th06fig02.jpg
But all it shows is a dialog box for user and password, not showing any icon, background nor asterix when I type the pass.

I also tried editing /etc/sysconfig/desktop from XDM to KDE, but nothing changed.

Any help is appreciated!
