multiple desktop features

Hi

i'm a big time newbie to linux and trying slowly to weane myself off my win2000 box.

one thing i do like in win is the mdi interface which isn't available in linux (or is it!!??).

anyway, my problem stems from the above where i'm using programs with mutliple windows such as numerous toolbars etc as found in the graphcis tool gimp (for example). all the windows come up nicely but due to the absence of mdi, they all just appear over whatever is open. what i aim to do as a result is use the multiple desktop feature to open such programs into and have the (blank) desktop as the background to the multitude of windows that open here for that program.

basically i want a desktop with no icons on it at all. i'm using kde 3.1 on redhat9 and whenever i remove (or add) an icon on one desktop it does the same on all others. is there any way to have a different set of icons on each desktop (or none for this case)??

any suggestions would be appreciated.

Like on Windows this depends on the application.
However, KDE interface guidelines strongly suggest to use MDI only when appropriate and in the case, use a smarter form then Window-in-Window MDI.
Tabbed MDI for example.

Actually GIMP is an MDI application.
It has only one set of tools/menus für all open documents in contrast to a SDI application like KWrite, which has menus/toolbars bound to each document.

Good idea in any case, keeps the taskbar emptier when it is set to only display applications of the current desktop.

I'm afraid it is currently not possible to have different icon sets on different desktops.
Not sure if KDestop of KDE3.2 will be able to.

It is not Linux. The problem is the policy of KDE. In theory MDI is forbidden in KDE (exceptions confirm the rule :) ), however it is coming back, sneaking in the form of tabbed windows.
