You probably have tried this already, but here's how I did it:

Open a chat window, then Settings -> Configure Shortcuts, scroll down to the "Send Message" variable and change it from the default (alt+enter) to merely enter.

By the way, universalkopete is a must-have add-on for kopete in my opinion, get it from kde-apps and try it out if you haven't already.

try "bzip -d <file>" or "bunzip <file>". Konqueror should hava a service menu do decompress the file but I had a problem with some formats and I don't remember if this is one of them.

The last kopete as a section in the configuration settings specific to the send message key. It's a list o radio (or check?) box with several common options "Enter", "Ctrl+Enter", "Alt+Enter", etc. I don't remember where it is but I've used it recently so it exists and works for me.,

and if it's a *.tar.bz2 file you can do following:
[code:1]tar xjvf <file>[/code:1]

I have broken my system few times while trying to configure it under the influence, and the lesson is that it's a great learning experience fixing the system on hang over... :)

I love kopete, but was about to go back to aim because I couldn't send with <enter>. I just figured it out. Follow the instructions below but note my additional comment.

NLK's comment:

The confusing part for me was how to change it. Scroll to "send message", select "custom", click on the key button to the right of it, select "primary shortcut", click on the white X (clear shortcut). After the shortcut is clear, the key button will be blank. Now simply hit the "enter" or "return" button on your keyboard. It will record the action and make "enter" the new default.
