I am using the bootable CD O/S 'Knoppix V3.1'. I am running windows 98 when not on the knoppix CD. I want to be able to connect to the Internet. But when I go to KPP, I'm not sure how to configure my modem. It tells me to enter something like '/dev/stty0' for COM1 .... then change the number to 1 for COM2 and so on. I have tried all 4. And when I try to querry modem, I get either 'can't locate' or 'modem is busy' error.
Chances are you are using a winmodem. These modems require software (typically proprietary, copyrighted, etc) for full functionality. In order to use such a modem under linux, you'll need to google/linux for it, but make sure to check if your modem is supported.
Knoppix may autoconfigure a lot of hardware, but they'd have to sacrifice other packages for winmodem support.
knoppix doesnt do well with winmodems but at this site you can find out if your modem or one you maybe shopping for is right for your application in linux.
