I don't know if that [alt] key trick is possible. I'd try a keyboard layout with "dead keys" (you can configure that in the KDE control center). You can then type the accented chars as a sequence of accent and letter, for exampleQuoted

I'm trying to do some work in OOo for Spanish class, but breaking out the character sheet gets to be a pain. How can I type the accented characters (áéíóú) and the ñ. In Windows, you can type [alt] and a combination of numbers (160, 168, etc.) to get characters of that sort. How can I replicate this on Linux?

I selected 'Spanish' and 'sundeadkeys'. I have all of the accents working except the tilda'd n. Which key is for the tilda in the spanich layout?
