I upgraded a Dell Optiplex GX1 (350 MHz Pentium CPU, 256 MB ram) from Suse 8.2 to 9.0. After upgrade the box booted to run level 5 OK and the services continued to run OK (Samba/CUPS, MRTG, and Apache). I can also use shell and fvwm2 with no problem.

The problem is that if I try to logon to a KDE session the PC freezes with a kernel panic while KDE is "Initializing peripherals". Even if I boot with the Suse safe setting this happens.

How can I find out what KDE is doing during the start up process? Specifically during "Initializing peripherals". Thanks for any help or comments.

I did find my way to Cntl+Alt+F10. That is where I noted the kernal panic message but no additional useful information. I also reviewed the .xsession-errors file but did not note any useful information. Looking at the xfree config file for something out of place is beyond my knowledge.

I thought that if I could find information on the start-up procedure especially "initializing peripherials" I might be able to disable any unused hardware or comment out any unneeded initialization and thus bypass the problem without hindering my use of the PC.

I could always do a fresh install but then I would have to reconfig Samba/CUPS and MRTG as well as restore all my personal settings - I really don't want to go that route.
