kernel panic during kde start up

I upgraded a Dell Optiplex GX1 (350 MHz Pentium CPU, 256 MB ram) from Suse 8.2 to 9.0. After upgrade the box booted to run level 5 OK and the services continued to run OK (Samba/CUPS, MRTG, and Apache). I can also use shell and fvwm2 with no problem.

The problem is that if I try to logon to a KDE session the PC freezes with a kernel panic while KDE is "Initializing peripherals". Even if I boot with the Suse safe setting this happens.

How can I find out what KDE is doing during the start up process? Specifically during "Initializing peripherals". Thanks for any help or comments.

Check the xfree config files for hardware settings.........SuSE might have incorrectly identified something that may not cause fvwm2 any problems, but KDE doesn't like........... :)

PS: Take a look at the .xsessions-errors file in your home directory for any possible clues.......

I found this thread from a Google search for a way to view messages _after_ logging into KDE (I'm assuming your logging in okay but it freeze shortly after that):

If it begins only after logging in KDE, then try going to your message
console, Ctrl-Alt-F10, to see if you can catch an error there as KDE
attempts to boot.

Thank you for the replies.

I did find my way to Cntl+Alt+F10. That is where I noted the kernal panic message but no additional useful information. I also reviewed the .xsession-errors file but did not note any useful information. Looking at the xfree config file for something out of place is beyond my knowledge.

I thought that if I could find information on the start-up procedure especially "initializing peripherials" I might be able to disable any unused hardware or comment out any unneeded initialization and thus bypass the problem without hindering my use of the PC.

I could always do a fresh install but then I would have to reconfig Samba/CUPS and MRTG as well as restore all my personal settings - I really don't want to go that route.

N/P.................Here's the Google search result I used if you're interested................might find something useful.. :)

Google Search: kde +"Initializing peripherals"

Oh yeah.............I noticed when searching through some of those posts that a font misconfiguration can also cause kde to freeze.....
