KDE 3.2 icons and window panels

I have managed to install KDE 3.2 using Konstruct and can now login to it successfully. However, there are no icons on the desktop (which I know/assume I can put right) and more seriously if I open an application the application window is fixe din position on screen (cannot be moved) and has now window border with the minimise, maximise and quit buttons.

Anyone know what I might be missing?

control center > desktop > behavior


in this window under the 'general' tab there is the option:

[] Show icons on desktop
