kde doesn't behave in dual head when playing movies / screen blanks

If I configure my laptop in a dual head mode then mplayer and xine both cause the 2nd display to blank for 3-4 seconds whenever they start up or finish. On the main display there is no such problem. Under KDE3 there was no such problem.

I use mpg for presentations and use short videos launched from within this - the screen blanks are a terrible problem.

It doesn't seem to matter if the screen is next the primary or a clone of the main screen - everytime a movie starts or finishes the second screen turns off for a few seconds.

kaffeine doesn't cause this problem but kaffeine cannot be controlled externally, launched without the decorations and border or requested to loop from the command line and the constant splashing up of the file name over the video seems difficult to stop which makes it useless for presentations.

kde3 / kubuntu

I have just tried this using KDE3.5 in lucid (https://wiki.kubuntu.org/Kubuntu/Kde3/Lucid) and this _does_not_work_ either.

After a bit of messing around it is working perfectly - I just had to kill krandr to stop the screen blanks.

Since this provides a reasonable clue to the source of the problem (but I don't appear to have krandr running in kde4) does anyone have any ideas how this might be worked out in kde4?

kde 3 - stopped working

Scratch the previous post - It _was_ working perfectly but then I did something, not sure what it was, could have been updates, could have been logging in and out, could have been changing the screen resolution but now no matter what I do the 2nd screen is blanking again in kde3.

this problem is driving me mad - there must be someone out there who knows if it is possible to use mplayer in kde on a second screen without the screen turning off for a few seconds!

Who knows what is going on but this appears to work (bizarre)

The best result I have is that for kde3 or kde4 if I try mplayer -vo gl ...
(which crashes) then any video application afterwards runs just fine
(mplayer xine or kaffeine) without the blanks. If I log out of kde and
back in again regardless of which flavour it stops working.

I have no idea what the problem is or where it lies but logging in or out of kde starts it up again.

Any suggestions as to where to post this?
