Multiple desktops, multiple wallpapers

I have been using linux since 1995 (kernel 1.0.2) and building and using KDE since the pre-betas of 1.0. Reason One that I have been using KDE since its inception is the ability to distinguish different desktops by using different wallpapers. (Reason Two is that GNOME is and always has been an unmitigated nightmare to build, though early releases of KDE were no treat either. Reason Three is that KDE seemed to be more grownup in its attitude towards usability, while with GNOME there was a tendency to go for kewlth, with the result that it frequently outsmarted itself.)

WHY did you take this ability off the requirements list for 4.0? What silly eye candy could possibly make up for this ergonomic loss? And what the hell is that stupid footprint doing in the upper right corner?

Could not agree more

Ditto. It seems that KDE 4.0 is less functional and less customizable than my much loved KDE 3.x, and the widgets are starting to really annoy me.

complete agreement

And why can't we see the icons for open windows, and why is it so slow compared to 3.5 and I could go on...........;

How to switch to KDE on FEDORA 9?

This thread is not a perfect fit for this help request,
but comes closest to the problem and is actively visited by people knowing the answer...
The forum admin might move it or remove it...

I installed FEDORA 9 on a laptop from the 6 CDs. I opted for the basic version (not development, not Web server).
Resulted in approx. 3 GB space occupation on the hard disk.

It only required to insert the CDs disc 1 2 3 from the 6 CDs.
REMARK: I wonder why nobody said this in the download instruction for those with a
slow Internet access (no problem with me, for this aspect).

The installed system comes up by default in Gnome, and no evident way to switch to KDE,
while it is generally said that KDE is within FC9.

On my past FC (FC 7 or so) on my desktop,
I can opt during log-in (or after log-out) between some desktops, including KDE, GNOME.
Now there is nothing like this. The only options are like "restart" and "shutdown".
I tested in the terminal window (within Gnome) if the command startkde
would result in some error message. No, command unknown.

Now I have the option to re-install from FC 9 LIVE / KDE version,
install from it Fedora 9 to the hard disk, then extend it via the net.
But for various reasons, this is not an appreciated choice.

So, before doing this, I am asking here for help.
Perhaps it is the usual primitve error of not having seen where it is....
