Help- Desktop goes black!

I installed the official KDE 4 release to my Kubuntu 7.10 machine by installing the KDE4-core package. On start-up, I get the new login manager. I select KDE4 session and login and I see the KDE4 splash animation showing the desktop is starting up. Then the screen goes black with a white mouse pointer. If I move mouse around and click all over the place, eventually I get a grey screen with a black square that would appear to be some sort of window. More furious clicking causes the window to disappear and the screen to go black again with just the mouse pointer.

My original KDE 3.5 install still works fine- I am using the nv graphics driver for my nvidia GeForce 6600 graphics card. Is there some way to configure the graphics driver for the KDE4 operation that is different from the KDE 3.5 configuration?

Thank you.

RE: Help- Desktop goes black!

Hmmm. I just discovered that the Trash on my KDE 3.5 isn't working- I get a box popping up that says "malformed URL" and the System menu comes up empty, too. I can still access my HDD via dolphin (both the KDE4 and the old version are working. My desktop icons have disappeared, too. Any ideas?

Thanks,
