kpackage not working

Hi I can open kpackage but it doesn't fully open. The progress meter at the bottom of kpackage shows that it is opening and meters to the end but then it is like it stops short of fully opening the app. This has only been happening a couple of days. I did a new install of debian4 and only got connected to the net a few days ago. A friend changed the repositories for me as I am still a newbie with many things within Linux and I wasn't able to get any updates etc so now I am able to via the konsole. There are problems there too though as some programs have unmet dependencies which I try to fix but nothing I try as a newb works. The main thing I am trying to install is skypebut it tells me that libqt4-core and libqt4-gui are missing. I tried to install them myself but it seems I am going around in circles and they are not installing. The skype icon is in the 'internet' menu btu when i click on it, it doesn't open the app.

First thing I would do is check the Debian wiki and make sure you have all the repositories you need. Ask your friend and make sure he didn't remove any. The things you need ought to be there in the Debian repos.

I don't use Debian myself, I can't guarantee that you aren't missing anything important. If you can find a list on the Debian wiki, and you don't seem to be missing anything, you could try installing what you want with a different package manager. I like Synaptic, but it isn't a KDE app, so you may end up needing more dependencies to use it. Maybe try Kynaptic or Adept. Then try using that to reinstall KPackage.

If you don't need a package manager GUI, you can also install skype and indeed do everything else (except have a nice looking list of available packages) by using apt-get in a Konsole terminal.

Sorry I don't know what a Debian wiki is.
This is what happened when I tried the other stuff:
carla@carla:~$ su root
Password:
carla:/home/carla# apt-get install kynaptic
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package kynaptic
carla:/home/carla# apt-gte install adept
bash: apt-gte: command not found
carla:/home/carla# apt-get install adept
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
adept: Depends: adept-manager but it is not going to be installed
Depends: adept-installer but it is not going to be installed
Depends: adept-updater but it is not going to be installed
Depends: adept-notifier but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages
carla:/home/carla# apt-get -f install
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 97 not upgraded.
carla:/home/carla#

Oh and skype is working well now! Thanks

Hmm. I don't know. In general the forums and IRC channels for your own distribution are more helpful. I only joined here yesterday, it unfortunately seems quite dead. I get the impression your problem isn't really a KDE problem too. You may find more help here - http://www.debianhelp.org/ - or here - http://wiki.debian.org/UsingDebian . Good luck!

Ah

OK I have never done the IRC thing. I was a member of this forum ages ago but I had a Linux friend that would come to my place to help out....he doesn't anymore. I am trying to learn by myself but I keep stuffing up. Ah well I am also checking what they say on a linux forum too. Thanks for trying I will try those things you suggested.
