Super user or Root

Hi there, I have been away from KDE for a while and I just installed KDE 3.5.4 on Free BSD 6.2

Here is the problem:
I have invoked KDM in my freebsd configuration files so that it loads at startup, I didn't figure this would be a problem because in eariler versions (the ones that I an used to) you could log in as root. Evidently that is not the case anymore!?! So now I have to log in as a user, which does not give me admin privegleges. I read about the Super User Mode in the help file, but there doesn't seem to be a clear explanation as to how to invoke this mode, the only thing close is the "Admininistrator Mode" button in the login Manager in control panel. When I press that I get a diologe box stating: "su returned with an error"

So kids, what do I do? I can't get to the command line in Free BSD and KDE won't let me log in as root, so I can't modify any to the config files, so I preatty much have a useless install. . .

Oh yeah and I can't start BSD in single user mode either. . .

Anybody out have any ideas for me?

Thanks!!!!

i think you have somehow ruined your freebsd installation.

Thanks for your reply, but I don't think that is the case. I think that it is rather that I'm not familiar with this version of KDE. All the apps are running correctly, I just can't do anything that requires super user privileges. Thanks anyway for trying to help. Does anybody else have some ideas?

Well, kde does not mangle with your system, so you should be able to become root by logging in as root (commandline), or using su (also commandline)

Yes I know, but KDM (the KDE manager) won’t allow me to get to the command line. When freebsd starts it takes me right to the KDM login screen, from there I can only log in as a regular user, not as root. I can’t leave KDE and get to the Command line. When I quit KDE, it takes me back to the KDM login screen. It is a vicious cycle, I can’t get to the freebsd command line. This is the problem; there is nothing wrong with the bsd that is running behind the KDE desktop. Am I making myself clear?

Ah ok.

Newer versions of kde don't allow you to login as root in kdm.
But they give you a warning, they don't throw you back to kdm.
This looks more like a failed start of kde.

on linux, kdm also allows you to do a text login, e.g. press the [sessions] button and look for an option to go to a console.
You can also use ctrl alt F1 to enter a console
in kde itself, you can open konsole to get a window with the commandline.

What you can try to do is open a commandline, login as root and type:
startx -- :1

if kde starts properly, then the problem is in the configuration of kdm.
if kde fails to start, then there could be an error in the /root directory preventing kde to start.
