Modem Busy?!

When using the Linux system as a USER, not ROOT, I keep getting a notice that the modem is busy and I just don't know why.Perhaps one of you have been this route before.

The hardware is a Dell Inspiron 5100 and the software is Suse v10.0.

When in ROOT I can dial out using the on-board modem but not while in USER.

The ttyS0(zero) file is owned by ROOT and the group is "uucp" not "dialout". I've tried "chgroup" to remove uucp and replace it with dialout but on re-boot, the system resets back to uucp.

when using the terminal, when I dial groups I get "root root root". Dialout does not show up, nore does uucp?!

I've tried adduser USER uucp, with no effect.

Any ideas?

you could try to change the permissions to the modem file (/dev/ttyS0) to give users read/write permission or make the dialout application SUID root to make it run with root privileges when started as user.

Tried that, doesn't work.

Trying to figure out what is causing the modem to be "busy" when bringing up Linux USER NAME/ACCOUNT as opposed to the ROOT ACCOUNT. The modem works fine in ROOT but it was noted that when using Linux USER NAME/ACCOUNT the group to which the modem is assigned is "uucp". Tried using chgroup to "dialout" but still no luck.

Thanks for getting back. It's appreciated.
