setting file associations is a bummer

I am using Microsoft Excel via CrossOver... which works great when I use "Open With."

However, when I open a SS by clicking on it, it opens in OpenOffice instead of Excel.

To configure KDE, I tried the following:

1. rt clk the Excel SS > Open With > Windows Applications > Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office Excel 2003 > check Remember application association... and the SS opens in Excel... YESS!

However, the next time I click on the SS, it opens in OpenOffice... Bummer!

2. System Configuration > KDE Components > File Associations > application > msexcel > Add > Windows Applications > Programs > Microsoft Office > dbl clk Microsoft Office Excel 2003 > MS Excel is added to the top of the list (just above OpenOffice) > Apply > OK

When I follow the same procedure as a check, MS Excel is not in the list any more (OpenOffice is the only entry).

3. Using the procedure in #2, I applied the same changes to vnd.ms-excel... with the same result... clicking on a SS still opens in OpenOffice.

It is as though KDE allows me to make changes, but does not "remember" them.

How do I get my SSs to open in Excel instead of OpenOffice?

you could check with kmenuedit which command opens files in excell, and then use that command in the file association in stead of the programm name.

Thank you for the fast reply.

As you suggested, I ran kmenuedit, but the command for opening Excel is the same as the command shown in file associations.

that is correct, since both use the same source.

but with the file associations you can browse to predefined entries, or type you own command to use.
Since the predefined entries appear not to function correctly, you could try to set the command manually.

another thing that might help is renaming ~/.local and restart kde afterwards.
and you can look in ~/.kde/share/mimelnk if there are conflicting files present.
