Movie screen capturing using KSnapShot

Hi.

I'm wondering why this is happening... While I play encrypted DVDs with Kaffeine, I can still use its "screen capture" function (<Ctrl> + S) to capture screenshots without any problem. However, I can't do the same using KSnapShot. What I want t odo is capture the full desktop including Kaffeine showing a certain video. Since Kaffeine only captures its own image, I must rely upon KSnapShot. How should I get around it?

Thanks!

Re: Movie screen capturing using KSnapShot

You can capture the picture if your player uses native X11 video output.

Normally a player will use XVideo or another accelerated output, which KSnapshot cannot capture.

So try to set Kaffeine to use X11 output.

Aah, great! I changed the video output to use xshm (X11 output) in Kaffeine. I can now capture the images using KSnapShot. Thanks a million!

Now... is there a catch to this? I mean, does using X11 output cause any performance degradation? I haven't noticed anything so far...

Yes, X11 output is much slower than XVideo. Even if you may not notice it on some movies, you will notice it on higher resolution ones. So once you are done taking snapshots, it's best to switch back to XVideo or whatever your accelerated output is.

Thanks again! The default video output is set to "auto." I have switched back to it immediately after I was done capturing necessary screenshots.
