[kopete] Moving 'status message' button next to 'set status' button

Hi,

I came straight from the version of Kopete which came with Konstruct's download/install of 3.5.1, and I'm very pleased to see that I can now see my status/away message without having to hover over the service icon in the lower left :)

Only one problem - since I can no longer set my status message from the same widget as my status (which is completely a good thing!), if I want to change both, and I usually do, I have to change my status waaaay up at the top, then change my message waaaay down at the bottom. I tried configuring the toolbars, but couldn't find the status message display widget, so I guess it can't be moved by the user. I think this should be next to the 'set status' widget at the top, basically the same as MSN (so I'm hardly having to move the mouse between the two widgets).

I'm quite happy to muck in with the coding if required :)

Thanks,
Graeme.

RE: [kopete] Moving 'status message' button next to 'set status' button

Just read another thread, which says developers generally don't read these forums :( What's the best method of communicating info like this directly to developers - file a bug report?

Thanks,
Graeme.

The functionality you want is added in 0.12 which is due for release real soon now (aka i need to get off my butt and do it)

Also, in general, the best way to communicate with developers via the mailing list for the app. you can find a (nonexhaustive) list of available mailing lists on www.kde.org/mailinglists

Basically yes. Some mailinglists do as well.

Great! Thanks, Matt! :)

Does that mean it's checked into SVN? If so, I might try checking it out tomorrow and building. I'm building against KDE 3.5.1, and when I tried installing Kopete in another directory (so it didn't clobber the old Kopete), it crashed loading the address book (I think). I finally decided to clobber the old version and it works fine if I install into my KDE dir, so I might try that with the SVN version - I'm sure last time I tried it, it crashed, but I wasn't installing it to the KDE installation root....

Thanks again!

Graeme.

yes, it's in SVN. the checkout path for anonsvn is svn://anonsvn.kde.org/branches/kopete/0.12

and the normal "build KDE stuff from SVN" process applies.

RE: [kopete] Moving 'status message' button next to 'set status' button

Hi Matt,

Thanks, I compiled it up from SVN this morning :) Which functionality were you talking about? I tried to put the Global Status Message widget on or below the Main Toolbar, but I can't drag the lower bar to the top, nor can I add the GSM widget to the MT via the Customize Toolbars option. In the end, I dragged the MT down to the bottom, so it's sitting just above the GSM. Was this what you meant?

Thanks,
Graeme.

PS. Other unrelated question, but whenever I select the Behaviour/Chat tab in the options, the interface always defaults to the Kopete Email Window, with no chat window option available. It then saves this, and I have to edit the kopeterc manually and restart to get the chat windows back again - any ideas? I can post a new thread if that's appropriate...

RE: [kopete] Moving 'status message' button next to 'set status' button

In 0.12 there are two buttons in the main toolbar related to status. The first one is responsible for setting the status(online, away, busy, etc.), then one next to it is responsible for changing the status message. Hopefully this gives you what you want.

As far as the other issue goes, I'm not sure what the problem is, but it sounds somewhat like an installation issue. Perhaps a reinstall will fix it.

Ah, I see what you mean - the button to set the status doesn't also display it, like the widget in the status bar - what I meant was that I wanted the widget which *displays* the message to be at the top. I like the MSN Messenger way of having the status message at the top, in the same place you change it, and the status displayed in text (ie. Away, Idle, Offline, etc). At the moment, I think the only way I can tell my own status is to look at the tiny little icons in the lower right of the status bar for the overlaid icon depicting my status (which isn't easy - it's smaaaaall!). Is it worth filing an enhancement request to do this? Alternatively, what's the procedure for having something checked in if I code and test it out myself - is there some kind of approval system in place to stop people checking in any old rubbish (feel free to point me to a link for that question, I dare say someone has that info on a webpage someplace)?

Thanks,
Graeme.
