Laptop static and DHCP switch

I hope this is not asked a million times before but I couldn't find it anyway.
I'm looking for a tool which makes it easy to switch from static ip (both wireless and cable) to dhcp (both to) for use on the job and other networks.
I use static at home for p2p and other things (sometimes cable sometimes wireless) but the rest of the time I need the laptop to be set to dhcp and discover the network (at work, friends house etc). I hate to say but a friends laptop using win makes this a breeze. I'll stick to debian and KDE for ever but would really like to know if there is a tool which can do this. Perhaps setup a profile 'home' which makes both the wireless and cable static and a profile 'outside home' for dhcp. I've tried a bunch of utils and some do what I want but the laptop is also used by my girlfriend who has no linux knowlidge so I need a gui. Is there any KDE based app out there that is what I need?

Regards

RE: Laptop static and DHCP switch

powadha you are not alone.

Hopefully someone more experienced than me (almost anyone) will be able to shed some light on our delima. I have a laptop with Linspire (Lindows) with KDE 3.3.2 and as described in the KDE man, in the Control panel under 'Network' there is there is a listing for 'Network Settings & Profile'. There are tabs for TCP/IP, Wireless, and FIrewall with a dropdown selection for DHCP, Static, and PPPoE, and an 'Enable' checkbox.

I installed PC-BSD on my wife's laptop and luckily the Network and Internet were recognized because using KDE 3.4 there is no option listed for 'Network Settings & Profile' I can't find where to set DHCP, nor is there a place to set the Workgroup (MS) under the 'Local Network Browsing' option as there is in 3.3.2. No big deal 'cause it works fine.

However, I just bought a really nice new laptop (AMD64 with Gentoo preinstalled) and KDE 3.4. This one does not recognize the network or the Internet and I'll be damned if I can find a place to set the DHCP or the workgroup (except in Samba).

Is this an example of KDE being new and improved and less intuitive? Was the 'Network Settings & Profile' section moved somewhere else in 3.4?

Sorry for piggy backing on your question but maybe someone knows the answer for both of us. Any and all insight would be appreciated.

Thanks,
K.
