Suse 9.3, KDE won't start

I have a linux install, just a few days old, and already I broke it. As much as I'd like to blame the program, I know in the end, its my ignorance thats the problem. So i need help.

I have Suse 9.3 professional, and am running KDE.

I logged in as root to copy some files from my Windows partition to my linux one and I got a prompt to configure my Monitor. I decided to do it. Within Yast I set the monitor to Vesa 1280x1024 @ 75 htz. I was unaware of my model # so i figured this would do. It told me I needed to restart before the changes took place. A little later, after the restart, KDE no longer loaded. Instead of getting the regular GUI login screen, I was taken to the command prompt linux login. It seems to function (as far as my inexperienced status can tell). I tried logging in as both root, and my user account and running the command "startkde".

This of course doesnt work, and it complains

kdeinit: $display not set

This is the second time I have had this very problem in the last week. I know i'm doing something wrong. I'm not a tinkeror, I just want a working Linux box. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

btw, in my /etc/sysconfig "displaymanager" file,it is set to DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm".

this is my first linux os, and my command line experience is very small. Any help will have to be lamens.

Hey, advice off of the top of my head would be to run this command as root in the console: startx
This I think will start kde if you have certian files preconfigured to load KDE on the start of the X windows system. But I am not sure for I run FBSD and I dont know your exact configuration. Are you running xorg or xfree86?
