I appear to be having a similar issue to this in ICQ, where The contacts I imported from the ICQ server show online/offline status correctly, but a new contact I create did not upload back to the ICQ server, and the staus would always be offline even when the user was online. I got the contact status to appear correctly by adding the user to the contact list on the ICQ server using the ICQAnywhere flash based client. As soon as the contact was created there and I brought my Kopete client back up...
