If you have SuSE, you are lucky - SuSE is the first distro I have found that allows you to overcome this problem. The blinking disk light is caused by the kernel flushing cache pages to disk - I won't pretend to understand the full in and out of it, but basically, after a process writes anything to a variable, the memory page holding it is marked as "dirty". The kernel flushes "dirty" pages to disk every 5 seconds by default, so that in the event of a crash, you don't lose more than 5 seconds of...
I have successfully done this several times now between two SuSE 9.3 machines running KDE. Copy the following files/directories from the "source" machine to a media you can take to the "destination" machine - use a USB pen, a ZIP disk, whatever. The files (all in your home directory) are: .kde .config .local Desktop I use an xterm or Konsole, and do this via a "cp -rfp" command to ensure that ownership and access rights are preserved intact. Take the media to the destination machine and drop it ...
I would like to get Konqueror, running as file manager, to show icons for most file types. However, for graphics files (.jpg, .gif, .png, etc.) and for media files (.mpg, .avi, .wmv, etc.) I would like it to show previews. Hunting around Configure Konqueror, it looks like my only choices are preview on or off, for "file" which includes all files. Is there a way to do this selectively, by file type, file extension, whatever? I am running KDE 3.4.0 under SuSE 9.3. Thanks!
