Error Message Interpreter Wanted . . .

Good Day All . . . The attached graphic error message appears twice on KDE startup. I just installed Kubuntu 7.10 and I am having trouble having root recognised by a few programs such as konqueror and dolphin. I modify advanced feature to run as a different user - root but this is generally ignored and I enter ar a user. This is above my knowledge level. Does anyone have any ideas how I can track down the cause of the error? Thanks. Appreciate any help.

Mount & UUID Information Requested

Good Day All . . . I need some help. I wrote a few bash scripts that mount backup hard drive partitions. For the last few years they have worked well using "mount /dev/hdb1 /backup" at the beginning of the script where fstab is "noauto, user, exec." With UUID it does not work with mobility issues since my different computers all have different universal ID numbers. The UUID is assigned during boot but it is stored internally. My question is, Can I revert back in fstab from "UUID=??? /backup ext3 d...

Unpopulated gnome apps in KDE

Good Day All . . . I loaded a fresh install of KDE 3.5.6 Kubuntu 7.04 and I updated to 3.5.7. I loaded some gnome apps through apt-get. gthumb and f-spot were two of them. I opened gthumb for the first time and all I got was a window with two lightly coloured squares where the file list and thumbnails should be. f-spot exhibited the same characteristics. I tried to close gthumb by clicking the close button at the window's top right. After about 10-15 clicks, I got the force closure window with t...

Internet Connectivity Configuration Issues

Good Day . . . I loaded this question into the Debian Forum but three other messages on this subject have gone unanswered so I'll try here. I just loaded Debian 4.0 - KDE and after some days of trying I am unable, by default, to connect to the Internet. I want to operate without any network managers since I only have one connection. With KNetworkManager / network-manager loaded, the default is a wireless network setting but I do not have any wireless network components. After boot I am forced to...

Icons below status line in konqueror

Good Day . . . Please help me. I do not which area wants ownership of this thread but I'll start here. It sounds like an administration issue. When I open konqueror as a user in my 3.5.6 version in (K)ubuntu 6.10, I get three small icons on the left side of a bar just BELOW the status line. The three icons appear to be something like funnels. They are very small. This does not show when konqueror is opened as root. I have left and right clicked, double-clicked, and mouse_wheeled but no activity ...

Early/Late North America Time Changes

Good Day All . . . I am reasonably sure that I do not have a problem since I am synced to a time server for my time zone but . . . Since most of North America is changing the time two weeks earlier / two weeks later this year is anything in KDE as far as time zones go affected automatically by the new time change settings? Using KDE 3.5.6 on (K)Ubuntu 6.10. Thanks . . .

K3b: mkisofs option -no-cache-inodes

Good Day All . . . I have a problem with K3B burning only one copy of a named file per disc (creating hard links to this one file). I want to copy one set of TAR backup files to each of three directories to fill a DVD (in case of a read/write file error). One set of files only takes up 1/3 of the disc. No matter how many copies of a file are transferred - only one is burnt. This apparently saves space. The solution is an option -no-cache-inodes or disabling cache-inodes made to the "... advanced...

krandrtray - no help / no properties

Good Day all . . . I want to adjust my monitor's screen either 90 degrees left or right so that I can use the monitor in the portrait position and not the usual landscape position. I am using a ViewSonic VP2000s which has pivoting capabilities. My Kubuntu 6.10 is the only distro where KDE has failed to ID the monitor and it also fails to list it in display properties - hardware. X has it correct as monitor and model in xorg.conf. The closest pivoting relative to the VP2000s that I could find is ...

Configuration - 2 Distros (Dual Boot)

Thank You for the reply eldacar. Yea, I was thinking about the /home issue but each distro does so much 'damage' to KDE that even the same version may be sufficiently different to cause problems. Again, Thank You

RE: Kill Ksynaptics Touchpad Software

Bram85: Thanks for the reply but it is not there. That was one of the usual suspects that I tried. Top gives me a kpsmoused that is running as root. I killed that as root and the system icon disappeared but a new session starts the software again. Anymore suggestions? All are appreciated.

Kill Ksynaptics Touchpad Software

Good Day All . . . My last download of fc5 updates included the Ksynaptics software. Its' icon appears in my systems tray but I do not have a touchpad and I cannot kill it. I can temporarily quit it but it keeps coming back in a new session. The configuration area tells me that it needs some modifications to something to run but I want the opposite. It is not in autostart. Can anyone tell me which kde system file has the autostart for Ksynaptics. Thanks. Appreciate it.

Configuration - 2 Distros (Dual Boot)

Good Day All . . . It seems to take me an awful long time to get my system reconfigured with extra programs after I upgrade. So, I want to try something new. It may help me see what is missing sooner. I use three partitions (/, /home and /swap) for one distro. I want a dual boot to the old and the new distro upgrade on one hard drive. I know nothing about dual booting. I am planning - Distro Old (/, /home, /swap) & Distro New (/, /home, /swap). Now the questions. Can I share the /swap partition ...

Screensaver-Script-Disable/Enable

Good Day All . . . How would I disable the KDE 3.5.3 screensaver at the beginning of a bash script and then at the end enable the screensaver. I have a file access conflict with a backup script accessing the screensaver's random image directory at the same time as the screensaver (best guess). When it happens, it is an absolute total lockup with a hard reboot the ONLY remedy. I have the same type of issue with xscreensaver but that is somewhere else . . . Any help? Thanks.

kdesvn_subversion.desktop - What is it?

Thanks for the quick reply. I appreciate it. The search was done before I posted. I was concerned over the ellipsis "..." and what was missing so I searched all over. The closest that I can find to the file is one titled "kdesvn_subversion_toplevel.desktop" in the servicemenus directory. All the .desktop files seem to be generic. Is it possible for me to copy the file from another fc5 OS using KDE 3.5.0 into the servicemenus directory? Again Thanks for the reply.

kdesvn_subversion.desktop - What is it?

Good Day All . . . When I try to copy or essentially do anything with an icon in Konqueror in fc5 I get an error message about "The desktop entry file /usr/share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus/...kdesvn_subversion.desktop has an invalid menu entry - Exportto" This only happens the first time that I try anything per session. Later no more messages. I searched for kdesvn_subversion.desktop but came up negative. Any ideas? and more important How do I correct it? Thanks

Selective PassWord ByPass

Good Day All . . . Does anyone know or have any information about keyboard bypasses of password? For instance, if I am at the keybord and I hold down SHIFT+CTRL+b then the requirement to enter a user/password at KDM or GDM is bypassed. In the opposite then anyone else accessing my machine would be faced with the user/password request. Any information? Thanks.

HotKey - Expand Konqueror File List

Good Day All . . . Today my Linux virus checker reported twenty-five more folders than yesterday. I did not create them. Checking each folder individually is not an option with three thousand plus folders so I need a way to expand the folders with a hotkey then sort them by file creation date. If long term memory serves me correctly, Windows used the CTRL+* on the numeric keyboard to expand the listed folders. This combination in Konqueror seems only to highlight the file list. Does Konqueror ha...

Disabling Ampersands (&)

The very brief answer is Yes. I have written lots of utility code in Suse Gambas 1.0.6 and most of the command buttons have underscores. This is true until 'something' runs of choices then no ampersands. The attachment is a form with a number of meaningless command buttons. The text for each button does not contain any ampersands yet each button has a hotkey underscore. Thanks for the reply.
