not many gentoo users here :s anywhay, I have to thank Mystilleef for getting me into Gentoo, it's the best thing that ever happened to me, I've found it so efficient I have permantently moved from windows to gentoo and indeed, installation of kde, fluxbox or any other heavy-duty- program/gui is childsplay. The only thing I suck at are kernels, but that'll improve in time :p
Well, after one week, I finally got gentoo up and running it works great and IMO far better than mandrake (and in the beginning i really liked mandrake) its faster, installs are much safer and easier (of kde or any other application I mean) I admit that it does need some tweaking, I did the stage one install and did everything by hand. It was well worth it. And at the same time it learned me a lot of linux.
download kde 3.1.1 (wich has patches bugfixes and security fixes that hampered in kde 3.1) but get the RPM packages. install those and you´re set. Of course kde 3.1.2 has even more fixes, but there are no rpm´s for RH8, only for RH9 Personally i havent encountered this problem yet. I used mandrake 9.1 with kde 3.1 and except for a buggy harddrake, everything was ok for me
what version of kde do you have? there are some mem leaks with 3.1 yes so if you have this then it could be solved by upgrading
I personaly dont like RH9, I selected kde as gui, but i still had 90% gnome :/ so yes, its a shame they did that
oops, sorry, was just asking something about "another linux distribution" honestly i find making a new topic for it a waste of space (don´t know why)
luckily i already know now wich linux drivers i need to take for sound and video but one other thing: is n_hdlc and pppoe enabled in the kernel by default?
uhm, if i´m correct, if you select the tarball3 for gentoo install you dont have to configure your kernell and select modules manually like that. (of course you need to know a few names of what programs you want to install) thats what i understood from the install guide Dim, correct me if i´m wrong pls
i have similar problems, but i got used to typing it a lot.
might have found alternative, if I arrange that windows is on the big disk and clear hda (the first disk) gentoo will have the proper disk for itself and to create the boot partition on (the mind has been doing too much work lately it seems )
well, the reason why I still have second thought about doing this, is because I have no test system to try it on. If I screw up (and that happens, too often) 70GB of valuable info is gone in a flicker. I've read the install info but when I came upon the disk partitioning, I froze :/ It ś been way too long since I touched the dos fdisk program and cant afford to try anything out on the only computer I have. Plus the current partition set up is this: hda: ntfs (windows) hdb1: ntfs (massive da...
tried both but still prefer kde. mainly for the kdevelop program, (i have installed linux just for that alone :p)
After reasonable consideration I have decided to stay with mdk due to it's easy partitioning and quick installs (I have a neck to ruin an OS ) (and honestly I dont feel like installing yet another distro) but I do have one side question: when I do an rpm -ba <specfile> the configure of the source tarball uses this parameter: --with-distribution=i586 - Mandrake Linux Cooker while I simply installed the stable 9.1 :? or is it just using that param to indicate that building rpm's is part of the coo...
thnx! I just hope i wont screw up the install, i heard this is one of the most hardocre linux distro's....
I virtually would love to, but i fear my adsl driver is not supported there http://www.flashtux.org I use the eciadsl driver and it works on most rpm based systems and debian or slackware, but i dont think it will work on gentoo. And yes, i must change definitly, because i just ruined everything again in under an hour. Now my c compiler thinks I'm using mandrake cooker and had some severe bugs already If however there would be a suitable driver to work in gentoo for an eicon diva adsl usb wan mo...
not really, i did this without any version of kde installed. I had another gui (gnome) installed so no kde conflicts would happen. (like mentioned on the site) but after arts and kdelibs were installed, lets just say he couldnt find anything anymore and now after a reinstallation (for the 6th time or so) I tried to use those rpms from that german ftp i posted in that other topic, seems like there is sometyhing wrong with them, they require files that are either already installed or that i dont h...
good news to all. It seems the ftp i posted above works again you can dl all the kde 3.1.2 packages from there at high speed this makes your installation of kde a pleasure.
Ok, yesterday I ran into a big problem. I had to install arts and kdelibs to compile kdebase, but by doing so, tthe rpm packages of course already set the PATH and KDEDIRS and so on, that at one point when I tried to log off, mandrake got stuck. Reset was my only option, by wich I had a lot of harddisk hassle to get back, but when I came at the login screen, I noticed my wallpaper as removed, i had a list of all running processes instead of the users, I strangely had the option to log in as eith...
oh, i see. Well, i always install them because I need them soon. I am preparing my system for a full C++ obsession anywhay, on topic: to solve all of this package stuff: click on your menu, then on Configuration > Packages > Install software This will launch rpmdrake. Then go to http://www.kde.org/info/requirements/3.1.php and install the "required" and "recommended" packages. recommended is also needed because i had some errors without them wich ceased compilation. You can use rpmdrake to searc...
can you also use the source to install things then? and can you make some sort of installation packages?
