Setup KDE 4 Kicker

Hi, I installed all of the latest KDE4 components on Ubuntu. (Yeah I know I could have used Kubuntu, but I wasn't sure which I wanted). Anyway whatever the new kicker is called, it's not showing up on my desktop. How do I get it to start? Also there are loads of desktop configuration options that are missing when I right click and select 'configure desktop.' Either it has been much (indeed over) simplified. or this hasn't been finished yet? Is this likely to be permanent?

Kickoff New KDE KMenu for Debian?

Hi I am trying to install Kickoff The KDE KMenu replacement in Debian Sid/Kanotix from SVN. I managed to download everything OK and ./configure seemed to go fine - once I had installed all of the appropriate tools and libraries. After running ./configure (which I ran with no additional options - as I was unsure of what options if any to use) I ran checkinstall to build a Debian based package and this seemed to get really quite far, right up to near the end of 'make install'. However somewhere ne...

Icon positioning in KDE 3.3 and 3.4???

OK well I got sick to death of this issue of having to chase/rearrange my icons about on my desktop after every reboot, so I decided to try KDE 3.4 to see if this would resolve the issues I was having. Big mistake! Now the situation is much worse than it ever was - as every time I log in my icons look like they have just been spewed any old place. Some are ontop of each other, some are bunched together, some are on opposite sides of the screen. It just seems to make no sense and follow no logica...

Icon positioning in KDE 3.3 and 3.4???

Yes, but auto arrangement still doesn't place the icons in the position I want them. Ideally the solution would be an option that enabled me to right click and 'pin' or 'save' my current icon positions, so that icon positions are preserved, even after a reboot. I like a nice, clean, ordered, structured desktop - and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in this desire. GJ

Icon positioning in KDE 3.3 and 3.4???

Thanks. Yes I probably will make a script. It is just to keep things tidy after a reboot. I find it genuinely frustrating as a user when I reboot to be confronted with a desktop where the icons rarely maintain a specific or logical order. Right clicking is fine - as is selecting to automatically arrange the KDE icons. But the first requires user interaction (which after the 100th time of doing it just isn't any fun) and the second has some quirks of it's own - like icons arranging themselves in ...

Icon positioning in KDE 3.3 and 3.4???

Hi often after a reboot my KDE icons end up all over my screen. This is regardless of whether I have the setting to automatically arrange icons set or not. Ideally therefore I would like my icons to be automatically arranged the way i like them after every reboot. So I was curious what the actual command line instruction was to line up icons vertically in KDE? If I can find this out I intend to make a little script that will do it for me (not that I know yet how to make scripts - or where to put...

Need some help with look and feel please???

Quoted Note: One thing you could try is: Create a new user and check if he has the lost functionality. In that case the update didn't work and something's broken in your .kde directory. Well i don't think it's that drastic. Even root has lost this functinality. But to say the update hasn't worked may be stretching the point a little. It has worked. KDE is listed everywhere as being version 3.3, I have all of the new components as far as I can tell listed in the KDE changelog. The missing functi...

Need some help with look and feel please???

Thanks for the helpful response. But the problem is that my packager might claim that the upgrade is unsupported, since I upgraded myself. Though I guess I could always try their forum (given that their forum is even less active than this - although this does seem somewhat more active now). It's worth a stab I guess Possibly it is more of a KDE bug than a packager bug? Why would the KDE developers allow an update that destroyed some as you pointed out now quite standard functionality? Does anyon...

Need some help with look and feel please???

Lol, I was just there less than two minutes ago! To be honest I can't tell if that is what I need or not. It may well be, but as a non programmer I got somewhat lost in all of the jargon. It certainly seems like a very complex way to do something that you might think is esentially very simple. I got as far as following how to add an action to make make an image become the desktop background, but got lost in the detail of how to interprit this into recovering my lost actions with ark. (And also K...

OK I've pretty much resolved everything, except how to add actions to my actions menu and how to increase the level of icon zooming on my taskbar. If any of you guys can offer any input on this it would be very much appreciated. 30+ views and no replies is a lot. Did I mess up somewhere with any of the questions I asked? If so i appologise in advance. GJ

Need some help with look and feel please???

Hi I know this might sound trivial, but can anyone tell me how to re add actions to the right click action menu in KDE 3.3? Since upgrading to KDE 3.3 a bunch of my actions selections in this menu are now missing and I'm finding it hard to live without them. (there are a few things that I downloaded from KDE-APS.org that specifically depend on this. Reinstalling these applications has not worked. Can anyone suggest what I can do to get them back? Also is there some way to set the degree of zoomi...
