Brilliant - thanks, I think to, jelliebellie for the suggestion to check common and network on a branch. That worked nicely - compiled no problems with default configure on Mandrake 10. Only issue I had then was that it didn't find the plugins - helpful page at http://kopete.kde.org/index.php?page=installtips solved that, editing the /etc/kderc. Just get more and more impressed with kde Cheers, Nick
