Did you try as a other (new!) user? it may be something in your configuration files. If you really want to use KDE, consider somthing else that rh, they never really got the grip. Allthough i've never heard that one before...

Nothing can require a full system reboot, kill the app, or kill X and log back in. If you have problems with kate, i suggest that you file a bug over at http://bugs.kde.org Include as much information as possible, if you can't have a backtrade, attach your kate configuration files and the document causing the grief.

Just to clarify * katepart, kates editor component is in kdelibs. * kdebase/kate is the kate and kwrite applictaions. They are provided, because a Desktop needs a text editor. You could argue that the kate application could be in a seperate module, but something like kwrite is basic. But kde has a tradition for providing a full set of software. The KDE classes supports that out of the box, and even uses the colors configured by the user.

command shortcuts

You didn't state your KDE version, or where you set the shortcut. But if you unset the shortcut in the same place you set it and that didn't apply, it is a bug.

use the session management tools

In the latest versions of KDE, there is a line edit to specify a list of applications to ignore for the session manager in the "Session Manager" control center module. The format is a colon separated list of executable names, so you should put "kopete" in there.

Win key + numlock doesn't work

It probably allready is. You can see in the Keyboard Shortcuts control center module if your scheme uses this binding. Problem: it only works when numluck is off. I don't know why
