I do not think that such a feature will ever exist, as people crossing encodings mostly use Unicode (UTF-8 in this case). However probably that does not help you much. Have a nice day!

Just for your information: something like ./kmail is just a thin application that launches a library. So obviously in your case the wrong library is found. May I assume that KMail was compiled correctly and installed corretly? So perhaps you have to set $LD_LIBRARY_PATH or see if $KDEDIR or $KDEDIRs do not contradict with what they are supposed to be. Well, in any case, KOffice is not a "design study". However, sure, there is still plenty to do. (MS Word and StarOffice/OpenOffice have years of advance.)

Search in your $KDEHOME (normally ~/.kde) any .desktop file having a relation with text/html. Move that file out of the $KDEHOME. Then run (under KDE) kbuildsycoca Have a nice day!

I have no idea what it might. Could you look at the font substitutions in qtconfig ? Select each of your (missing) fonts and verify that they do not get substitued. Also do the fonts appear in the font dialogs of KWord? Have a nice day!
