Upgrade to KDE 3.1 in Slackware 8.1

I upgraded to KDE 3.1 via Kpackage utility in Slackware 8.1. Now on the desktop most of the icons and text are missing inside the windows and on menus. How can I fix this? Should I have upgraded via a different method? Shaun
