I often listen to BBC radio on the internet, using Konqueror most of the time. After I updated to KDE 3.1.4, as recommended on KDE's web site, this is no longer possible, neither on Konqueror, Mozilla nor on Opera. After re-installing KDE 3.1.2, I had it all back, on all three browsers. Can anyone explain this?
My telephone company has this web page: http://www.pgone.com It shows well on Mozilla and IE but on Konqueror the page is totally blank. Although the page is loaded it is not displayed. Any suggestions anyone?
I removed the Soundblaster card just to check whether the on-board audio chip would work with RH9. And it does - in the same way as the Soundblaster card. With the same init error - which is not there when I log off/on a second time. Yes, the problem is there when I log on as root, too. It is obviously a startup problem; when the error message does not appear the sound is beautifully present, loud and clear.
I have removed the Soundblaster card because RH 9 accepts the on board ALC650 chip. When initialization fails I just log out and in again and the device then always works. My Linux installation is the straightforward recent RedHat 9 distribution, with no kernel modules added. I did chmod 777 /dev/dsp but this did not remove the problem. I have now keyed in chmod 777 /dev/mixer, too, so I'll see what happens. I usually log in with my own username - not root.
At times, not always, when I log on and KDE starts up, I have this error message: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sound server informational message: Error while initializing the sound driver: device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device) The sound server will continue, using the null output device. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I use RedHat 9 and an MSI mainboard with a Via KT333 chipset / AMD XP1800+ cpu / ALC65...
The solution may be as simple as this: I have been trying to install a version of k3b which was compiled for RH8. I have now downloaded a version compiler for RH9. k3b now both installs and starts.
Strange, indeed. Installation of k3b is stopped stops because of a dependency between k3b and libmad.so.0. :?
I have tried to install "k3b" but find it impossible to get hold of the file libmad.so.0. (I now use RedHat 9)
What makes OpenOffice particularly excellent is its compatibility with MS Office - for those of us who have to work in a mixed system environment - and that OpenOffice is available on several platforms. I should wish, however, that OpenOffice would make standard use of Linux (KDE) resources like fonts and printers and user interface, the way it does so flawlessly in Windows.
What puzzles me is that if I delete myself as a user - and reinstall myself in an new /home/~ folder, everything is back to normal. No false error message. And, as I said, there was no error message when logging in on the outside of X and KDE. So I still wonder ... :? Thank you anyway!
I deleted myself as a user - and installed myself again in a new home folder. And lo and behold - there it was all in place. When I look at the file associations like you say, they are the way you say they should be - and it all works. Knowing how and why it works is the crucial part of it. Thank you very much! Tor K
I have installed the latest RedHat beta with KDE 3.1 - and everything works smoothly. Suddenly, however, I get an error message box saying that my user passord is incorrect, but by pressing Enter I still get in and there is business as usual. At console login, there is no such error message, and everything seems, as I say, to work as if there were no problem. I have checked the RedHat GUI user/password dialogue box and everything seems fine. Can someone give me a clue? :?
If you want to install (truetype) fonts globally you do it like this (RedHat 8.0.94 Phoebe): 1. Copy the fonts into the folder "/usr/share/fonts" 2. Run the command "fc-cache /usr/share/fonts" The fonts will then be available to all users. It works on my computer, at least (By the way, Bitstream have made a few truetype fonts ("Vera") available for the public. They look very good with KDE ! ) Of course, copying the fonts to the "~/.fonts" directory is also a fast and easy alternative, but then y...
With KDE 3.1 bits and pieces are really falling into place. There is very little now that I'll miss making the final switch from Win2000 to Linux. KDE is definitively the best graphical user interface. I may have made a mess of something but am unable to understand how and when: I use KMail. If I receive a mail with a link to a web page, which is quite common, it may happen that Konqueror opens, displaying a page, but referring to a local temporary folder/filename, not to the URL in the link its...
