According to blogs by KDE4 developers at http://planetkde.org/, most of that is because it's not finished yet. The panel will be configurable. Even the current look/feel isn't necessarily final. So there's still hope you might like 4.0.0. This is what they get for calling it a "release candidate" when it's really more of a beta. Everybody will think it represents how the final 4.0.0 is going to be. Poor project planning/management.

I temporarily switched to gdm and tried Gnome. I started KDE from gdm once by mistake. Later when I switched back to kdm and KDE, I noticed that my KDE menu had been recategoried and some file types no longer have an associated app! Is there a way to undo this?
When I logout, after the screen goes blank there is a several second delay and then kicker reappears! After a few more seconds with just kicker on the screen, Xorg finally quits. Is it a bug? My entire Gentoo Linux system, including my 2.6.8.1 kernel, qt 3.3.3, KDE 3.3.0, and everything else was all compiled using gcc 3.4.1. A current standard "stable" install of Gentoo would compile everything with gcc 3.3.4. Is that a bad thing?
Woah, there are people who still use 2.95?!?! Isn't that version ancient/obsolete?
I'm using an ~x86 install of Gentoo Linux. 1. Is Qt 4 Preview 2 backwards compatible with Qt 3.x stuff, like KDE 3.3.0? 2. What versions of gcc is it known to compile with? (I'm using 3.4.1, but I'll revert to 3.3.4 if I have to)
Will KDE 3.2 themes work in 3.3?

That file does look a little big, even for gcc... hmm. Try using RedHat's built in package management/download software first.
If you can still start 3.1, right click the K menu, click Menu Editor, and copy info about the menu items you want into a text file. Then edit your 3.2 K menu, and insert the same menu items. The same can be done for desktop icons, etc.
That configure script might expect the compiler's filename to be "gcc". If that gamma compiler is compatible with gcc, you could try creating a symlink named gcc pointing to the gamma executable. Or you could modify the kopete makefile to use gamma instead. You might as well just install gcc - you're probably going to have to install it sooner or later anyway - most linux software is designed to compile with it.
Wow, I can't believe that option isn't in the control panel - how could they leave it out?
Check out the GTK theme switcher. It sets the theme and font that GTK apps use when they're run outside of Gnome. You distro may have a package for it, the package name in Gentoo portage is "gtk-theme-switch"
What sound card and driver are you using? Same thing happens to my MIDI music volume. My relevant specs: KDE 3.2.1, Gentoo Linux 2004.0 SoundBlaster Live! (emu10k1 driver) whatever ALSA version comes built-in the plain 2.6.5 kernel
Try this:[code:1]cd /usr/src rm linux ln -s (the directory of the kernel you want the nvidia module installed for) linux[/code:1] That works for me whenever I upgrade my kernel (on Gentoo Linux) and have to reinstall the nvidia module.
