To add a program, right click and select "Add to desktop". ETA. Make sure widgets are unlocked (right click on the desktop and select "unlock widgets") and you should then be able to mouse over the icon and see the options (red "X" etc) and remove the shortcut.

I feel your pain. Just learning the commands to access files in BASH is confusing for me. Of course, the last time I used a command line was on my Sinclair ZX Spectrum in the 80's!!
