This turned out not to be the problem I thought it was. sendmail was simply not liking the e-mail address. I couldn't see the problem because I am not allowed to view the sendmail log file and as best I can tell, no error is reported anywhere else. The It guys finally had a look and the problem became obvious.
I've been running kmail on Red Hat Enterprise 3 for years. I seem to have regular problems where kmail stops working with sendmail. It happens whenever our IT group makes any kind of change. They changed the sendmail.cf last November, I eventually sorted that out and it was working until yesterday, when IT changed something else.
