Using ctrl-alt-F# keys crashes KDE and X.

OK, it is definitely not KDE's fault. Just a follow-up. I am starting to think this is NVIDIA's fault. I went back to nv driver by renaming /etc/X11/xorg.conf and run startx. I tried to reproduce the problem and no crash with gkrellm-hdplop plugin! I will stop posting updates in here unless I find evidences it is related to KDE. Thanks for reading.

RE: Using ctrl-alt-F# keys crashes KDE and X.

OK I reproduced it without KDE, so it is not KDE's fault! I basically loaded up GKrellM2 (doesn't matter if it uses defaults or customized) with gkrellm-hdplop plugin running only on ONE virtual desktop in KDE v3.5 or Gnome v2. Then, I switched to another virtual desktop that didn't have GKrellM on screen. Then, I pressed ctrl-alt-F# (# is a number like 1) to go back to console/text mode. It resulted a X crash like: Backtrace: 0: /usr/bin/X11/X(xf86SigHandler+0x81) [0x80c89c1] 1: [0xffffe420] 2:...

Using ctrl-alt-F# keys crashes KDE and X.

Hello, I am having a crash problem with my KDE v3.5.8 crashing X to console (I use startx command when booting up Debian). Anyways, I think I had this problem for months and maybe a year, but finally figured out the pattern to reproduce it. Basically in KDE, I go to virtual desktop 2, 3, or 4 (I have four set up). If I press ctrl-alt-F1 (or any other console screens) keys to go back to console/text mode, then KDE and X crash. I can reproduce this easily. If I am in virtual desktop #1, then no cr...

Starting up KDE hangs with a black desktop and movable mouse cursor.

Someone told me to try adding echoes in my /usr/sbin/startkde script like this: In my /usr/sbin/startkde script: # finally, give the session control to the session manager # see kdebase/ksmserver for the description of the rest of the startup sequence # if the KDEWM environment variable has been set, then it will be used as KDE's # window manager instead of kwin. # if KDEWM is not set, ksmserver will ensure kwin is started. # kwrapper is used to reduce startup time and memory usage # kwrapper do...

Starting up KDE hangs with a black desktop and movable mouse cursor.

I tried without a /etc/X11/xorg.conf and then tried no NVIDIA driver (just VESA). I still got the hang. So it can't be X11 issue. With no NVIDIA driver, I did the lsof, ps aux, .xsession-errors, and strace again without NVIDIA: http://pastey.net/77574 I still don't see anything interesting, but then I am not a programmer/developer.

Starting up KDE hangs with a black desktop and movable mouse cursor.

Interesting. I tried removing kde kde-amusements kde-core kdebase ksmserver packages (mainly ksmserver) and ran startx, and X kicked me out because it couldn't start KDE due to missing items. I reinstalled ksmserver (didn't install the other uninstalled ones), and same hang occurred. I reinstalled the uninstalled packages. I also tried removing kdelibs with its dependent kde, kde-amusements, and kde-core packages. I got the hang. I guess none of those packages are causing the problem. Ugh. :( So...

Rebooted and Xorg.0.log

I decided to dump my 61 days of uptime and reboot. Starting up KDE hangs with a black desktop and movable mouse cursor.

Hello. Earlier on my home Debian system, I exited KDE and X back to console/text mode and restarted it (startx) but now I get a hang. I see a black desktop/GUI/X with a movable mouse cursor after seeing NVIDIA logo and an one second gray desktop. I have to use ctrl-alt-backspace to kill X to get out of it. I did some investigations and experiments. I tried making a new shell account, ran startx, saw KDE's wizard, skipped it, and it hung again. I tried it again and went through the wizard with de...
