I started having the same problem after a recent update via Synaptic from the PCLinuxOS repositories. It's not an issue of capslock or special characters. I do not use KWallet so that's not the problem either. I've switched to the aMSN messenger client until the Kopete problem is solved. It sucks to have to do that.
