I've noticed the same issue. According to the number of answers that you've received so far, and to what I thought already, there must be no solution as Beryl when running takes in charge many of KDE features . The only way would be a sound plugin in Beryl (or in the upcoming Compiz Fusion), with a complete new sound theme(s) replacing KDE sounds. But I don't see that happen, nor mentioned anywhere on the web.
Hi all, that happens generally after a reinstall of Kubuntu. Just after I've installed my ATI proprietary drivers and have rebooted a couple of times, I find it impossible to restart xsever from the login screen. Log out and restart work fine from the desktop, restart works fine from the login screen, but I get a black screen if I try to restart xserver from KDM.
