RE: Plasma....Why?

Quoted from "pajatopmr" I could not agree more. In playing around with Plasma, it seemed like it was an idea borrowed from something I've seen my kids do with their Mac laptops but for which has no appeal to me. It strikes me like an attempt at desktop layering, a main layer that has applications running on it and a sub-layer that has, hopefully, useful, "non-applications" running on it. If that surmise is not the point of plasma I'd love to hear what the real point is since I don't get it yet....

KDE4 Package

I'm running KDE4.1.1. However, when running Adept Manager there is a package labeled 'KDE4' with a description: 'the K Desktop Environment version 4 official modules'. This package is NOT installed. How does this differ from what I am running? Should this be installed?

KDE4.1 Install Problem

Quoted from "jetpeach" so at the login screen, there is the session you can choose, you have tried both kde3 and kde4 there and after logging in you get a sigsegv for both? that would surprise me a lot, since kde 3.5 should definitely still work unless something really went wrong during your other installs with adept. That's the crazy part. I did go back to the login screen menu and select "KDE" (it did not specify version). After booting this version it looked just like 3.5. I then went to the...

KDE4.1 Install Problem

After a successful install of HH/KDE4 --> 4.1 (64bit) I did other installs using Adept. Shut down for the night. This morning when starting I got the message '.............Plasma Workplace crashed causing Signal 11 (SIGSEGV)'. I'm able to login using the alternative desktop that looks look KDE 3.5. The 'About KDE' menu items say I'm in 4.1. Anyone care to help this noob? Thanks.

How is KDE 4 new

I've been told by others that KDE 4 is substantially different from all previous versions; that is is a complete re-write of code and that the foundation is different. Although I'm quite familiar with all the major OSes, I'm not a programmer. Can someone give background on what makes v4 so different? Or point us to a write-up on the subject? Thanks

RE: need help installing beta KDE 4.1 on Kubuntu

Quoted from "miesnerd" I have limited experience with installing from source, but Im fine with learning. Im also really excited about the direction KDE is going, and I have a Kubuntu install with KDE 4.0. I want to try out the beta. Can someone link me to some good step by step directions? Thanks. I second that motion. Just finished getting Kubuntu 8.04 with KDE4.0 all updated. Everything is running fine. It is on a older Compaq Armada that is personal but not critical. So I can afford to trash...

Why KDE '4'

Big fan of OS2 and the OO Workplace Shell. Nothing quite like it to this day. I'm a new user to Kubuntu and like it. Running GG on a Dell with an ATI Radeon 600 (so the ATI drivers don't work). Always like sofware development moving things ahead. Was wondering the purpose of moving to KDE '4'. What is the main goal? Is it an architectual change that will allow more compatibility and greater functionality of v4 apps? Or is it a DE functionality re-write. Just interested to know.
