There's no need to start from scratch: RG Pro Hockey would provide much of the GPL source code necessary to make a sports 3D simulation I would think: http://pages.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/~hassana/rgph/screenshots.html Just modify the physics a bit, and update the player models and field. Yoda soccer: http://yodasoccer.sourceforge.net/ is a good quality GPL football game for linux too which might help.
