Device icons

-- Edited - The things you plug into a usb port will be identified on the desktop with a usb device on/off icon or other random icon based upon what the system determines a class of device to be. Because USB devices may be hotswapped, there is no way I know of to link a specific icon to a specific device that may not be present at the next boot. I originally gave instructions on how to change icons for on/off devices but that would disable the existing USB icon in favor of another. Not a good pl...

konqueror folder icons (thumbnails)

UPDATE! I have perfected my original solution and now one can automatically create thumbnails to serve as custom folder icons in any folder you choose. Find the instructions and scripts at: http://www.soapbaux.com/linux If you decide to install the scripts (I tell you how) you will be able to customize any folder in 3 easy steps. After selecting a representative photo to put on your new thumbnail: 1. Copy the photo and rename the copy to temp.jpg 2. Paste the renamed copy back into the same fold...

Smaller tray icons

Another solution may be to add another panel atop the normal one and add your extra applications to it. Once configured, it can remain hidden; just open it when you need it by clicking on the hide button (left or right is selectable). Right click on the Panel, select Add to Panel > Panel >Panel Right click on the new Panel to configure its hiding options, then add your applications to it. The new panel can be customized further by reducing its width or height independently of the main Panel, How...

Multiple Desktop feature not working

At the top of the Multiple Desktops screen photo you included, the "Number of desktops" is set to 1. You should be able to 'activate' the others by clicking the 'up' button at the end of that line to equal the number of desktops you want activated (5 by your example) - so it will read: Number of desktops 5 Then if, as you say, after clicking APPLY, the new desktops deactivate somehow, it is beyond my understanding. But, since you said you were a newbie I thought I'd offer the default advice, jus...

Messed up trash icon

I did that once - it is really no problem. But it seems like any help you get on this topic relies on links that don't work or indirect answers that assume too much, so here is what you do, step by step! Right click on the trash icon on your desktop and select [Open with...] Choose Kwrite or Kedit (any text editor) and when it opens, look for the EmptyIcon= and the Icon= lines. The correct entries should read: EmptyIcon=trashcan_empty Icon=trashcan_full You don't have to be in root to do this: E...
