unwanted linebreaks with Kate

I use Kate 2.0 (with KDE 3.0.3-8.3 Red Hat) as my main editor, I like it alot, but one small problem bothers me. Kate seems to produce automatic line breaks before words that wrap. Say I have some text: "their own Rankine-Hugoniot equation, whether the shock heating process produces". I decide to insert a phrase before the word "whether": "on the other hand I want to know" The result is this: "their own Rankine-Hugoniot equation, on the other hand I want to know whether the shock heating process...

Konqueror crashes if doubleclick mp3

When I run xmms from a terminal, eg xmms u203.mp3 & xmms works fine If using Konqueror on the same mp3 I R-click/"open with" and select the first offered program, xmms %F, Konqueror and xmms both work fine. BUT, if I double click the mp3 file, Konqueror always crashes with this error trace. Any suggestions much appreciated. On this pc I am running RH8.0 and Konqueror 3.0.3-14 Greg (no debugging symbols found)...[New Thread 8192 (LWP 5801)] 0x420ae169 in wait4 () from /lib/i686/libc.so.6 #0 0x420...

decisions about a new linux-KDE installation

My niece age 17 has a pentium II system, 256 RAM, with a single 17 gig hard drive (4 gig used), presently running windows XP and ADSL internet. She would like to try linux - KDE (she is impressed with the linux-KDE applications on my system) and does NOT have my limitation that I must use RH 7.1 distro. She prefers to use dual-boot until she gets used to linux software. She will use office software, music, multimedia and internet applications etc. She has almost no linux experience. What is the ...

fonts: is this some sort of RH thing?

Thanks for these comments. a. version of XFree: README for XFree86[tm] 4.0.3, it says What is XFree86 4.0.3? XFree86 4.0.3 is the first update to 4.0.2, the third full release in the new XFree86 4 series. In Control Centre/Information/X-server , Vendor release no is 4003; Version No 11.0 (As already noted, I have RH 7.1 and KDE 2.1.1) b. xsftt: I looked at xsftt; given that I already have a font server xfs, will this one work without interfering with the existing one? While looking at this quest...

fonts: is this some sort of RH thing?

I thought I must have overlooked the obvious thing (again!) but this time I did not. The documentation says you do: Control Center->System->Font Installer However in my version KDE 2.1.1 there is no Font Installer. In fact I generally like the KDE fonts and do not HAVE to have the additional tt fonts; but is there a way to add them without font installer- maybe just copy them to one of the directories that are currently recognized as a source of fonts? greg

fonts: is this some sort of RH thing?

I have a RH 7.1 system with KDE 2.1.1. I wanted to improve the fonts in openoffice, so I copied the tt fonts on my Windows XP system into a new directory on my linux KDE workstation, /usr/share/fonts/truetype, and used the spadmin command as described in OO help to install them. It worked and Openoffice reads these fonts fine. I then tried to make these fonts accessible to other applications. When I check the font paths on my desktop, I get the following: [root@localhost program]# chkfontpath Cu...

mouse/keyboard grab

From time to time my console locks, mostly when I have left it unattended for 15-30 minutes. I can go weeks without experiencing a lockup, but eventually one will occur. I try Ctl-Alt-Esc, and also Ctl-Alt-F1 to see if I can shut down the offending application and exit gracefully. Almost never do these work, so I have to power off and reboot. Mostly at the time I will be running Konqueror, Kedit (maybe 2 instances), Kmail, Mozilla, and some application software (ciao etc). I run Red Hat 7.1 as t...

What distros work well with KDE?

I disagree about RH. I use RH 7.1 and KDE, and I am very happy with KDEs performance. Not every user has the same requirements and experiences - as a RH user I will certainly stick with KDE. (I am forced to use an old version of RH as my software has not been tested and validated with the newer releases). Greg

script to open apps and adjust size of windows

When I start my work session (with KDE desktop in RH linux 7.1) I would like to run a short script that would prepare the desktop for the usual applications. The script would (a) open Konqueror with a tall thin window (a specific size); (b) open Kedit in a small window (tall and thin, with a size I can specify with the script) on the right side of the screen , and (b) open a second instance of Kedit in a small window on the left side of the screen. I can readily adjust the sizes of the various w...

spinning gear wheel in Konqueror

I was copying files using drag and drop in the file manager, when the recipient directory developed a spinning gear wheel on it. I tried help but could not find anything about this, please someone explain what it is or means. I could not stop it or make it go away, but when I exited and re-started Konqueror it had disappeared. I use version 2.1.1.

file select and copy in Konqueror

I have a small problem with the Konqueror file select function. I am forced to use version 2.1.1 in KDE 2.1.1 because my main applications (x-ray astronomy software, eg ciao) require RH linux version 6 or 7.1. Later versions of RH are not fully tested with the applications. I am very happy with KDE nonetheless, and I use many features. In Konqueror file manager, if I L-click a file it launches with the appropriate application. If I R-click a file while holding down the control key, I select it, ...

problems with su and kdesu

Forget my last post and panic - I checked the .bash_profile file on another linux pc, and I restored the line I altered exactly .../sbin:$PATH:$HOME:/bin and then when I logged out I was able to come back in as root in the normal manner. The above points by members are much appreciated. when I do (as root) $PATH, I get this mess: bash: /usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/kerberos/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/local/bin:/root/bin: No such file or direc...

problems with su and kdesu

I did $PATH [root@localhost /root]# $PATH bash: /usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/kerberos/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/sbin :/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/local/bin:/root/bin: No such file o r directory I thought maybe the error message showed an obvious problem. In the /root/.bash_profile shown below, there is an apparent error $HOME/bin. I removed this entry, but afterwards I logged out, and root could not log in as usual. I could start kde normally as greg, and I tried to reinsta...

problems with su and kdesu

I have run RH7.2 for a few years and I prefer KDE desktop to gnome - I am using kde 2.2.1. The system works fine logged in as ordinary user (greg), and logged in as root works fine also. But using su or kdesu as greg does not work. For example adsl works fine as root. Lately I have tried to run adsl by opening a new terminal and using the su (and kdesu) commands to work the various adsl comands (adsl-start, adsl-stop etc) of the rp - pppoe software. Here is what happens with the command adsl-sta...
