I can only reinforce what bram85 suggests, you have the flexibility to alter every part of the desktop (via Control Center > Appearance & Themes, AND, via Control Center > Desktop). Also, if you're using Firefox as a browser, you can adjust it's behaviour and appearance (via Edit > Preferences). KDE is very flexible in terms of its appearance. Customise to your requirements !! Remember, art is in the eye of the beholder.

I run Debian ETCH with KDE 3.5.5. I've upgraded my kernel recently and I now have no sound on my desktop. KsCD plays but with no sound!.
