KDE4 - the great disappointment

While I agree on the bug/instability front, I have to ask. What was it like in the early 3.0 days? On the usability front I have suggestions but agree that it seems there is nowhere to really be heard. I have observed and taken part in the Ubuntu community brainstorm and its apparently a good method. Go to brainstorm.ubuntu.com and see what I think the KDE community needs. You contribute ideas and others vote on wether they are good ones. This gives the developer a chance to weigh the value of i...

KDE4 - the great disappointment

Sorry to interrupt the 'Whine Party' But I thought I'd point a couple things out. KDE 3.5 wont magically stop working with the introduction of 4. I'm by no means a KDE veteran (in fact I didn't care for 3.5 at all) but its hard to ignore the vision that is going into 4+. What seems to be an adverse move now has more longevity than the 'same ole' you guys are used to. It seems to me that 4.2 will be configurable to the point of being like 3.5. The KDE team is working hard to ensure that not only ...

KDE4 comments,especially regarding the Interface

In order to see folders on the desktop you can add a folder widget which should default to home i believe. Kde 4.2 will include a folder widget to as a desktop background to bring back the old functionality. To be honest, though i'm a desktop worker, I havent missed it very much.

Do you like file managers to have ftp and sftp?

How about an "I dont really mind either way" button?. I tend to use an FTP app to do all that anyway. They are generally more versatile.

KDE 4+ Praise and Constructive Suggestions

In the past I have never been a KDE fan but I cant help but admire the direction and vision that this project is taking on. Naturally the goal would be an environment where widgets and functions are drag and drop compatible between panels, apps, menus and the desktop. What I would like to see though is widgets moving with a key eg. Super+Left mouse to drag a widget from a panel to the desktop or vice versa. I would also like to see visual feedback eg. icons moving to make space while I'm draggin...

Quoted from "Amy" I agree but I think the developers need to reply to the suggestions. I offered a few yesterday and no replies which makes me feel I am talking to a stone wall but I just want to be helpful. Perhaps the KDE 4 Brainstorm needs to be more like brainstorm.ubuntu.com where you can offer up ideas and people vote on them. I think that would be an excellent way to earn developer attention as well as weigh the value of implementing those ideas.

Actually I cant say that I hate it at all. The vision is there and while this is not the best, most powerful or even the most usable release of KDE it certainly shows the potential. Not every step to the pinnacle is going to be on solid ground. When KDE 4 matures and sees a few more releases, you will forget about the growing pains. Its up to us to support these guys and let them do their thing, maybe even offer a few helpful suggestions.
