better late than never...

sorry, i reinstalled the system, that of course somehow "solved" the symptoms... and i just forgot about my post last year. but: it re-appeared on another machine, and after weeks of checking everything, i found what caused my troubles -- just some wrong PATH defined in /etc/environment. obviously i removed a folder which i had in path, but didn't remove that entry. this seems to have unset PATH completely, so that "fold" couldn't be found (it's called by /etc/X11/Xsession). @Rinse: thanks after...

an endless loop of kdm

i'm desperate... until yesterday, i could use kdm for logging in without any problems. i don't see why this is, but now, instead of starting kde (or any other environment), kdm just restarts the xserver and by doing so itself. it's irrelevant whether i try to login as normal user or root. starting kde from console via startx still works fine, though. i didn't even touch any config-files, actually, that's what makes me wonder most. all i did was to install java2 (1.4.0 with webstart), mozilla 1.3...
